Social Studies Department

Upon completion of the social studies courses, the high school student should understand the traditions and practices of society. Furthermore, the student should be able to develop informed opinions on social questions facing the citizen. To achieve this goal the student needs to be grounded in the social and institutional history of society. The student will also explore the major problems of the day in a manner that develops a logical thinking process and independence that teaches the techniques of research, analysis and persuasion. The overall aim of the program is that the student be capable and willing to participate in a pluralistic society. Social studies classes emphasize student achievement; therefore, students are grouped into classes according to their academic ability which is determined by standardized tests, performance and teacher recommendation. Students are challenged according to their individual talents and potential.  


SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT GOALS
1. Students should be able to analyze primary sources.
2. Students should be able to differentiate among the 5 themes of geography.
3. Students should have an understanding of the foundation of democracy as it has evolved in America – American politics so they are better able to be active participants.
4. Students should be able to appreciate the diversity of world areas and cultures to create global citizens.
5. Students need to learn how the past impacts the present, future, and the individual.
6. Students should grasp the variety of behavioral-social scenarios and their implication for society.
7. Students need to learn and master specific skills, such as cause and effect (long term, short term, cause) and chronological order.
8. Students need to be able to research present topic in social science and history using multimedia research – presentation method.
